Cover is a recent experiment in painting using book covers as an alternative surface for the medium. Cover suggests the substrate on which the work is painted. How does paint function to simultaneously overlay and reveal what is already found on the surface?
The series extends my work in appropriating notable painters’ imagery. I relate this to a musician who covers a song to make a transformative take on the original. The functionality of the book is no longer useful and now relays a poetic conversation about the narrative of written words. The painted book’s literature is unavailable to open because the pages are adhesively fixed together. Yet an exterior image is presented to allow a pondering of what was left inside. This allows for the visual language of painting to take precedence over written communication.
