SONITA SINGWI
— break —
november 09-december 09, 2024
reception: Saturday, november 09, 4-6pm
artist talk @ 4pm with Ezra Shales, reception to follow.
Farm Projects is pleased to present Sonita Singwi: —Break—. This solo exhibition of minimal, abstract paintings and ceramic sculptures offers an in-depth exploration of a single form: the fold. The artist writes: “Folding is an active part of our daily routines and how we move our bodies in space… On a micro level, protein folding is a process essential to life. The significance of the protein’s shape to its function underscores the significance of form and has influenced my works in paper, ceramic, and painting.”
Singwi’s paintings on linen are predominantly comprised of shapes created from planes of light and dark which create the illusion of folds in space. While her ceramic works also use planes of color to allude to the presence of a fold they are not limited to illusion, offering physical folds as a mechanism for creating three-dimensional objects.
Together, the exhibition uses this ubiquitous form to explore the tension between the fictional world of painting and the real world of objects. The artist notes, “This duality is recognized in Indian philosophy as maya, or the idea that the physical world is an illusion.” In this sense, the exhibition leverages the power of the fold to invite viewers to contemplate the potential for illusion in the world around us.
The reception on November 9th will begin with a conversation between the artist and Ezra Shales. Shales is a Professor in the History of Art department at Massachusetts College of Art and Design whose research focuses on the productive confusion that lies at the intersection of design, craft, and art. The conversation will explore how Singwi’s work operates at that intersection, blurring the lines to open new areas of inquiry.
