Farm Projects is please to present a solo exhibition of process-driven paintings by Maine-based artist, M P Landis. In Composition Three: Variation One, the artist presents a collection of paintings-as-arftifacts created through a monthly creative cycle designed to explore the tension between chance and creative intervention.

As the artist describes: “Since February of 2020, I have begun 60 new pieces each month. They start in the home as informal note paper, used as coasters and sometimes to doodle and write ideas and lists, phone numbers and messages. At the end of each month, this somewhat marked and stained pile is taken to the studio for further use. From the many that are in process, I choose 15 each month to sign, title and date as finished.”

Landis uses the term “note” to describe each of the individual paintings in this series, drawing a parallel to music: like a musical note, myriad complexities can be evoked by each note depending on how it is played. A group of six or more “notes” is deemed a “composition” which is grouped and arranged using a chance operation. Together, the compositions in this exhibition capture the artist’s approach to process and artifact, the doing and the finished.

About the Artist Born 1965 in Lancaster, PA, M P Landis developed his practice while living in Provincetown, MA and Brooklyn, NY before moving with this family to Maine, where he currently lives & works in Portland, Maine. Since 1990, he has been in over 30 solo exhibitions and numerous 2-person and group exhibits at venues including the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, Mayo Street Arts, and Tiger Strikes Asteroid, among others. His work is included the Peabody Essex Museum, DeCordova Museum, Cape Cod Museum of Art, Naples Museum of Art, and many others.

“Through my work I am always interested in the dialogue between process and artifact, the doing and the finished. This tension is ever present in how I work and what I choose to exhibit.”
